Striated Voluntary (Skeletal) Muscle Tissue

Striated Voluntary (Skeletal) Muscle Tissue

The striated muscle tissue, which is under the control of the somatic nervous system; meaning it is voluntarily controlled. As their name suggests, most skeletal muscles are attached to bones by groups of collagen fibers known as tendons. In lupus sufferers the striated muscle tissues are weakened that results in the loss of control of the tendons that they are attached to.

In this image I have used a combination of red and orange gels to replicate the colours of the muscle sample and to produce the emotional effects the illness has on that particular part of the body. The red tones that have been cast onto the subject represent the aggression and intensity the condition has on the muscles, while the orange represents the amount of energy that is drained from the damage done to the muscle. However the yellow tones provided by the lichen represents the hope that each sufferer has, that their ailments will subside in time.

The Immune System

The Immune System

The immune system is a system of many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. To function properly, an immune system must detect a wide variety of agents, known as pathogens, from viruses to parasitic worms, and distinguish them from the organism’s own healthy tissue. I have decided to use the image that represents the immune system as a final image because it is the immune system that is initially affected by lupus. In lupus the white blood cells of the immune system malfunctions and begins to attack the healthy cells of the body, which results in the inflammation and pain that is experienced with the condition.

In this image I have used the forms produced by the fungus and tree bark to reproduce the visual aesthetics of the immune system. I have used the different depths of the tree bark to represent the area that the immune system is attacking, while relying on the lichen and fungal growths to symbolise the white blood cells that generate the immune system.

The combination of red and orange gels have been used to replicate the colours of the blood stream and cellular structures that carry the immune system through the body and to produce the emotional effects the illness has on a person suffering with the illness. The red tones that have been cast onto the subject represent the aggression and intensity that the immune system attacks it host with, causing all of the issues experienced with lupus.

Artery

Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. While most arteries carry oxygenated blood, there are two exceptions to this, the pulmonary and the umbilical arteries. The effective arterial blood volume is that extracellular fluid which fills the arterial system. This gives an example of how the illness is spread around the human body and how the effects of the illness are so vast, and how it can affect so many different areas of the body. The arteries are what carry the illness throughout the body.

In this image I have used the forms produced in tree bark to create the visual texture of an arterial wall. Using the fungal growths in the sunken sections of bark to replicate the appearance of red and white blood cells that pass through the arteries, using the red coloured gel to highlight certain aspects of the fungus, to embody the red platelets, while using the natural collections of fungus to signify the white blood cells.

The red tones that have been cast onto the subject represent the aggression and intensity the condition has in the blood, while the orange represents the red platelets.

I hope you like my work so far, please comment and share your opinions of my practice, do you think my photographs will help raise awareness for #Lupus? Please let me know! Also if there’s anyway that you could help spread my project around that would be amazing!

I plan on posting one of these a week as long as my health doesn’t put a block on it, although I will do my best not to let it stop me!

Hope you like them!!

Activated Platelet

‘Activated Platelets’ is an image taken from my series ‘Anti-Bodies’.

This image depicts one of the effects lupus has on the blood stream.

Lupus causes complications with multiple sections of the body, a part that is affected are the platelets.
The platelets are the clotting agents of the body and stop bleeding from a wound, in Lupus the platelet count is sometime lower than that of someone of good health.

This image uses the landscape to depict the platelet in its activated form for when the clotting process is occurring. The use of coloured lighting expresses the struggle of the activity and how aggressive the cells have to react within the body of a Lupus sufferer.

Exciting Times!

Well I have officially finished my degree! It’s taken four years but I got there and I’m damn chuffed!

However that is not the topic of this post, that will come later on tomorrow, today it’s about a design company named VIDA that supports hundreds of millions of people [in countries like Pakistan] that are building the products in the fashion industry with their hands and are struggling to get out of the cycle of poverty, they provide education to these people and supply them with the groundwork they need to break that cycle of poverty! It gives people a voice in their communities and the ability to create a better future for themselves and their families!

Last week a lovely lady from Vida contacted me and asked if I wanted to do collaborate with them and be part of their Voices collection! How amazing is that?! So I done my research on the company and couldn’t see any problems with it, so I sent in some images for their moderation and now they’re available on their site, with my own page! Here’s the URL =  http://shopvida.com/collections/voices/emma-powell

Have a little look, some of my more recent work from ‘Anti-Bodies’ (that I haven’t written a post on yet, but will do tomorrow) are available on tops and scarves! Along with some seascapes I shot in Egypt last year! If this selection are successful I intend on putting a few more up.. Well hopefully.

In order to keep my work on there I have to get three pre-orders of each item! Which I am extremely hopeful to reach!

Here’s a few more of the details:

All items/designs of three pre-orders or more will be shipped to you within 60 days, they are all handmade items and profits from sales go to a good cause! A minimum of three pre-orders need to be made for production to begin.

I have 15 days to get my first set of pre-orders so if you like these items don’t hesitate to order one.. or more 😉 and please share, comment, talk about this post so anyone that would be interested in them will have the chance to buy one! I would be even more thrilled if I could see these designs being produced, so any help in with publicity on this post would be great!

The Health Update

Well over the period from my last post, I haven’t stopped (apart from the two weeks where I was full of a cold and couldn’t get out of bed!). Everything has been jam packed in my new project, getting back and forth to my hospital appointments and fighting this awful fatigue and everything else with Lupus and Rheumatoid!

Well, lets get the easy bit out of the way, my health has been like a roller coaster over the last few months, one day I’ll be fine, then the next I’ll be confined to bed or the sofa! Then I’ll be fine again or I’ll be energetic and in pain the next.. I’m still suffering terribly with sunken knuckles which has caused issues in my wrist as well, here’s one way you might be able to imagine the problem, you know when you put the tip of your thumb to the tip of the index finger while arching them and it makes that O shape… well I can’t even do that with it, I get something more like a D, it’s so bad I even struggle adjusting the focus or zoom on my camera! That doesn’t come on it’s own mind, recurring problems with my knee, hip and back do make things difficult however, I will overcome these like I have everything else that these autoimmune diseases have thrown at me! I’m actually thankful that the rheumatology nurse has been understanding of these problems and is trying to sort out hand therapy and physio to try and sort everything out! Plus they changed my tablets! To try and stop the disease progression! Although they haven’t been to nice to me as of yet, got to give them a chance to settle though!

Finally the Catch up… Oops

I think I need to start paying a bit more attention to my blog, it’s been awfully neglected this year… It seems that every time I promise an update soon, it takes me weeks.. maybe months to actually get around to it. So I think I’m going to try harder to keep things updated.

Lets start with a quick recap on my last post, I’ve finished my second year of uni, finally, I had firsts all around (which I’m still feeling slightly high about XD), my constant war with Lupus and Rheumatoid had come to calm (however now the Rheumatoid is playing up.. Yipee! Slowly I’m losing my knuckle… Not good), I’m still going to attempt full time for my last year in uni =D and finally I actually got to go to EGYPT!!!!!! Ah it was absolutely fabulous! Now for a bit more detail, I think.

So from the last post about my uni work, which was part one of the cinematics project, I developed and finished part two, where I took the skills from part one and created my own theme. I decided to approach the landscape but at first I didn’t quite know where to go from there, so here’s how I came to my final decision, through 21 years of my life I have always remembered the top of Llwydcoed being smothered in trees, however one day on a drive (after a long span of illness) a massive settlement of trees had just gone, I was baffled and slightly upset by this, so I instantly thought, there’s my project, and after a discussion with my tutors, obtaining their approval, I was off and by the end of the day I already had a rough idea for a story board. Next I needed my locations and location shots, living in Methyr, being surrounded by nature, it didn’t take me long to decided where I wanted to go, some parts of the project based at the Neuadd reservoir and some at Llwydcoed.

After deciding on my locations I plodded along to my final set of six. It took a while to get them, after the problems with the lighting, I used artificial lighting in most of the images I had for the project, they are not easy to work with when they don’t want to work… But never mind I got there and here they are;

So what do you think? Do these images get the message across? If you’ve got time I’d appreciate some feedback.

Next up, it’s Egypt!!! So excited I got to go, was an amazing holiday and I got to see the Pyramids! Even went in one (which was a bit of a let down) but they were outstanding on the outside, they are a baffling creation and the word huge doesn’t come close to describing how massive they were! Just so you get an idea of how big they were;

DSC_3336 Look at how small the people look, just one block is the same hight as the person standing next to it!!! Can you imagine 2.3 MILLION! of those blocks stacked on top of each other to create this!!

The Great Pyramid at Giza

I’m still blown away by the pyramids there!

And here I am with Scott holding the pyramid!! XD

And here I am with Scott holding the pyramid!! 😄 The Egyptologist might be good when it comes to information about Egypt, but he can’t work my camera…

Along with the amazing pyramids I had the opportunity to go to the Egyptian museum which again was amazing =] and to top it off the Egyptologist was impressed with my knowledge OoO, during the quiz XD, so gutted you couldn’t take your cameras in T__T. Oh and how could I forget the Sphinx!! (I deserve a slap for that I think).

Well I never thought the Sphinx was so close to the Pyramids! I always thought they were a fair distance apart!

What it with Egypt and having all of these amazing structures!

We also visited the Citadel of Salah Al-Din, can you believe that this building is constructed completely out of marble!!

DSC_3219

Citadel of Salah Al-Din and burial chamber of Muhammed Ali

Again another amazing structure! The inside was pretty inspiring too! However I didn’t get many of the inside.. There’s just not enough time in the day… There were a few other visits on the trip but there’s not many photos of these, just a place to eat (wasn’t too bad) a static boat on the nile, looked quite posh on the inside if they hadn’t been decorating while we were there… All I could smell was paint, not nice, and then there was the papyrus factory which was rather interesting, bought myself a lovely painting of a scarab beetle which is proudly hung on my wall =D.

Also during the holiday we went on a VIP snorkeling cruise, ooooo I got to use my underwater housing!!!!! It was seriously nerve wracking!! But so exciting at the same time! Being able to use it in the Red Sea made it even better! Can you imagine all of the fish, all of the colours and different formations under the sea!! Under the sea, under the sea, darling it’s better, down where its wetter, under the seeeaaaa!! Oh wait sorry, I got a little carried away there, can you tell I like disney XD. But I have to admit Sebastian knows what he’s talking about, let me convince you a little..

My first underwater shot with fish!!!! So exciting!!!

My first underwater shot with fish(Red Sea Goatfish)!!!! So exciting!!!

On the cruise we had three stops, on the first one I was a tad bit precautious, with taking my camera in, I thought I'd take the easy way in and climbed down the ladder, I put my mask on and adjusted the snorkel, suck my head under and what was the first thing I seen, this terrifying looking creature, a Smooth Cronetfish, it looked horrible! It took until i got back out of the water to realise that there were actually two there!! Made my skin crawl!!

Oh lots of little blue fish, look at the colour on them and on the coral behind, so amazing!!!

On the second stop we were greated by these little critters! Look how many there are! I'm sure there was at least a thousand of them!!

Now this scene almost reminded me of a metropolis city with the traffic (the fish Red Sea Fusilier) running down the motorway that flows along the city edge (the coral reef).

Last one now, how lovely is the coral here? Its so colourful and again I find it quite tranquil.

And that’s Egypt! As for my health my Lupus seems to be under control and has been since the new tablets, but the Rheumatoid is a slightly different story at the moment… Sunken knuckles, sore hips and bad feet! Doctors are hoping it’s tendonitis but I don’t think so.. Since the injections of prednisolone haven’t done a thing!!

Well I think that’s a wrap for now! I’ll be back soon (I hope).
